Simple, we are kid experts! While family dentists practice general dentistry for people of all ages, a pediatric dentist spends all day every day only treating patients generally 18 years old or younger. Pediatric dentists undergo two extra years of specialized residency training after becoming a dentist. Their training includes advanced techniques and procedures to help even the most apprehensive child become comfortable. They also take courses in sedation, growth, development, orthodontics, childhood diseases, child psychology and children with special needs. This allows them to understand the specific needs of younger patients as they grow into adults. Read about the specialized training details from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
When should I visit a pediatric dentist?
Once your child has teeth it’s time to start cleaning and caring for them. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children are seen by age one or when their first teeth start coming in. Routine dental check-ups at least twice a year are recommended. The earlier you introduce your child to the dentist the more comfortable they will be with oral health care for life.
Why visit the dentist for baby teeth?
Healthy baby teeth are more important than most people realize. They not only allow for pain-free eating and drinking but they also keep the space for adult teeth to come in properly. Keeping baby teeth healthy is one of the best ways to prevent painful infections that can damage permanent teeth.
Tooth decay (cavities) are not the only reason to visit the dentist. Preventative services such as cleaning, polishing, fluoride treatments and sealants work together with dietary counseling and oral hygiene instruction to insure your child has a bright cavity-free smile for a lifetime. We also evaluate growth patterns, assess the need for early orthodontic treatment and much more.
